Great story, and Liz does a good job sharing the tale!
So nice to hear this kind of story! It’s both sad and amazing to imagine what it had to be like at that time…. I have a deep and sincere admiration for whites like Coach Zacher who didn’t have to get involved… but did. That takes a lot of character. As a black male, many of the liberties I enjoy today were paid for by good citizens, white and black. Some lost their lives standing up so that I would have the right to live as I do, today.
There will come a time and place where much of this is forgotten. That’s appropriate. I look forward to the day when it’s no longer socially necessary to remind ourselves. Meanwhile, hearing stories like Liz’s are a wonderful way to remember just how deep our nation’s scars are – but also, how much we’ve grown.
